The first time I used it to cook chicken breasts, my kitchen smelled like the smokehouse on my grandma's farm and produced a haze in the kitchen. Despite opening windows, running the fans, it took a while to clear out. The smell lingered for the next 3 or 4 days.Even though the sliding lid was shut all the way, I thought that perhaps there was not a very good seal. Therefore, the next time I used it, I sealed it with heavy-duty aluminum. The problem with the fumes returned, as there was the smallest of openings in the foil. I tried a modification of the idea last night, and the house stinks. Keep in mind, the wood measured did not amount to more than 1 and 2 tablespoons and 1/4 cup of water at medium heat as specified in the instructions. This smoker performed fabulously! I have used it over and over with excellent results. It can also be used for poaching large fish, etc.The one thing I would caution about it's use is that you need to keep a close eye on it.
