A lot. Apparently, more than the average bear, 'cause none of my running friends ever seems to complain about this problem. So years ago I started wearing light/low hiking gaiters, but always had to deal with the various hassles of an instep strap that doesn't really work with running shoes.Enter the Mountain Hardwear trail running gaiter. Wahooo!! It's not like these are a new idea--- folks in the ultra-running community have been making these on a very small-business-scale basis for years. It's just nice that these are now commercially available and easy to get from Mountain Hardwear. Light, stretchy, breathable, at least slightly water-repellant, and they stay in place without an instep strap, hurray! My only beef with them: the shoelace hook is ridiculously snug, it can be quite difficult to get it hooked on. Oh, and you really have to get in the habit of remembering to put them on... I prefer wearing these over hiking boots. However, a key weakness of this system is the velcro piece which adheres to the back of the shoe. Most running shoes do not have a smooth patch on the heel and the adhesive requires 48 hours to set. So not sure who you are going to hire to hold the velcro while it sets.When one of the velcro attachments fell off, I used another glue to adhere it back into place.
