As it is the heat from the stove is concentrated in the center of the burner especially when using the cast iron grill/griddle (which was included with my stove). The center of the griddle got very hot and the outside stayed a lot cooler.The Flame Tamer helps spread the heat out more evenly. Its a great stove, but tends to burn hot. This was for a chili cook-off so I needed a nice easy simmer. These worked great at dispersing the heat and avoiding any scorch. One of them did warp ever so slightly, but went back to flat with cooling.
