Well the knife is not well made. I dulled it on the first pice of wood I carved. The "snare wire" is no good. Dental floss is stronger. The water proof matches work, but are not strike anywhere. The strike strip is hard to work with as well. Also the matches are not in a case so on your fist fall or drop they would be no good anymore. The only thing good in the set is the fire starter. It works just fine. If you are looking for a kit to use out there this is not it. But if you are looking for Bear G stuff to collect here it is. It came pretty sharp. Anyone with common sense won't count on using it for chopping or splitting, but it will cut some line and you could probably use it for eating/cutting meat, among other smaller tasks. I've used it to make small feather sticks and it works out fine for that too. For me, more than one knife is the way to go. Keep this one for the smaller stuff and it's not bad. Seems to be built solid enough. The Firesteel: I've tested it a couple times, and it works as intended, i.e. it helped me make fire. I carry another one and keep this one as a backup. The Snare Wire: I don't know if I'd trust this for a snare (especially if I had other options) but it's copper wire. Might find a use for it. The Cordage: Simple, potentially useful for small tasks like lashing a knife to a stick for spearing, etc. Or lashing for shelter, though you're... I like Bear Grylls, he does a lot of cool stunts for a lot of cool causes, and I like Gerber. I've had a few Gerber knives and each one I've kept until it eventually disappeared after years of use and sharpening. So I guess you could say that I really wanted to like it.Unfortunately, I didn't like it well at all, let me explain. The pathetic wire was so small I lost it almost immediately, and the string soon disappeared as well. I did get to use a little bit of the rope, but it also was a little on the too-small-to-be-useful side. The knife is solid feeling and comes razor sharp, but it's TINY. So small that it's incredibly awkward to use for anything. All weekend I had Crocodile Dundee in my head saying "you call that a knife?" I didn't use the matches, which I'm sure are just average waterproof matches, and I always use those. I chose instead to give the fire starter a shot.
